World Heritage Status

Chirk Bank is situated in the English section of a
Unesco World Heritage site, something the residents of
Chirk Bank are very proud.

Chirk Bank Community Group

  • The Community Group was established to build the community spirit and raise funds through local events and activities to help out in many situations in and around the village. Over the years the main recipients have been the local Methodist Church, Weston Rhyn Junior School, youth work, and Friends of Chirk Hospital as well as Garden projects.
  • Chirk Bank is in the Parish of Weston Rhyn, but has its own individual character.
  • Although, a small community we are lucky enough to have two public houses and a Methodist Chapel. It is however, the attraction of the Llangollen canal, in particular Chirk Aqueduct, that draws people to the village.
  • Recently, the village has received an enormous influx of visitors because it is now part of a World Heritage Site. One of only a few World Heritage Site that spans two countries.
  • A Chirk Bank Community Group is now nine years old and is selling teas and cakes to visitors to the canal on Tuesdays throughout the Summer at the local Methodist Hall and provides visitor information to the tourist.
  • Recently, a community forum has been set up for the three North Shropshire Parishes of St. Martin's, Gobowen and Weston Rhyn.
  • The Canal and River Trust provided the plot of waste land that we have turned into an allotment and community garden. The group spent a lot of time and money since 2012 in providing a space for flowers and veg, hard walkways, fencing and raised beds, as well as an area to just sit and relax on their canal walk to the aquaduct. We were also left with a disconnected portaloo which we have clad from funds raised.
  • The gardening group planted thousands of snowdrops between the Gledrid Bridge and Monks Bridge, kindly provided by the grounds or the Poachers Pub, prior to their planned development. It's quite a sight in early spring.Still more to be transplanted!!
